A science student’s career search often leads to the field of microbiology and biotechnology. If you ask a common man what a microbiologist is all about, he might give you the general point of view that a scientist or a doctor working in the field of microbiology is a microbiologist. The statement is correct, but only pertaining to a small standpoint. For a better understanding, answers to all major aspects of microbiology are discussed below.
What is Microbiology?A general study of organisms (which are known as microbes) summarizes the general scope of microbiology.

Who is a Microbiologist? A person who studies the field of microbiology is known as a microbiologist.

Medical and Science Job Market Report

November 6th, 2011 Comments off

The third quarter of 2010 has seen a significant increase in the number of client requirements in comparison to quarter two of this year and during the same period in 2009. A number of Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology companies seem to be growing in confidence with their investment in Research which is clear by the significant increase in Discovery based jobs. This work is being managed both by the company themselves and by client visits and we have seen a significant increase in the number of jobs in both.

Sustainability and Lean based Management / Senior Engineering roles have also seen a significant increase this quarter. This has been consistent across the FMCG / Food & Drink / Medical Device / Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology companies. With a drive to make processes as efficient and products as green as possible this increase is as expected. A large number of our companies intend to increase production while decreasing their environmental impact – which although will be a challenge it is extremely exciting for people with a background in this skill set.

Genomics: A New Field with Amazing Potential

November 5th, 2011 Comments off

When it comes to careers, there is no field that changes so much, teaches so many, and helps us to define the world and the creatures living in it as do jobs in science.  From the tiniest microorganism to the largest mammal, from outer space to the depths of the ocean, these jobs allow a person to explore, discover, and inform.  Inasmuch as what we know about the universe changes, so do careers in the field of science.  One such career is the study of the genome (where a genome is a fully sequenced set of DNA in an organism), known as genomics.

Whereas in the past, specific genes may have been studied to establish the cause of genetic mutations and inherited traits, today primary focus is being placed on the genome.  Genomics studies require the scientist to systematically analyze the hereditary material of various living organisms, thereby gaining new insight into the function, evolution, and organization of the whole of genetic material.  Comparing complete sequences of genes can help scientists acquire new information on the survival abilities of seemingly similar creatures in vastly different environments.

Weather history is an exciting topic of research. The word “Thunder snow” is a weather phenomenon which includes the features of all the three unusual combinations of light, thunder and snow. It was observed by Neil Sturat a National Weather Service Meteorologist in the year 1978 when he was only 10 years old in Boston. According to him the Storm is famous in meteorological circles and it influence its path dumped 27 inches (somewhere around 67 centimetres) of snow on the ground for more than 2 days. But the heaviest snow, which however came for around a six hours continuous thunder snow storm which delivers somewhere around one foot of snow over a six hour period. In the past, the forecaster was responsible for generating the entire weather forecast based upon available observations. Today, meteorologists input are generally confined to choosing a model based on various parameters, such as model biases and performance. His job is of the researcher. His research makes weather predictions more accurate and saves many of the lives before calamities occur.
